These
are either pigmented lesions or some kind of vascular
malformation. They usually require combinations of laser
technologies. Before lasers, they were being treated by
surgery, which inevitably will leave scar. Many of them
could not be treated at all or treated unsatisfactorily.
A birth
mark is a blemish on the skin formed before birth.
Though birth mark is formed before birth, they do not
necessarily appear on birth. Many birth mark appear
after birth, usually in first few months after birth,
some of them although appear in second decade (10 to 20
years). Birth Marks are of different color. When on
hidden portion their existence doesn’t matter. Birth
Marks on the visible areas can be problematic & pose
social & aesthetic problem.
They are
part of the group of skin lesions known as "naevi" or
heamangioma. They are not hereditary. They are soft
raised swellings on the skin or flat lesions. Naevi are
often black due to increased melanin content in the
cells viz. Melanocytic naevous, Giant hairy naevous,
Baker’s naevous, Linear neavous, Verucus naevous etc.
When the excess melanin is located in dermis they look
greenish – Naevous of otta. Naevous may be brownish in
color due to increased blood vessel cells - strawberry
naevi or infantile haemangiomas.
The
haemangiomas are vascular malformations situated in skin
– Portwine stain (capillary haemangioma). When they
extend in deeper tissues subcutaneous fat & muscles –
cavernous haemangioma.
Birth
mark needs combinations of lasers AFT 540, Diode,
Q-switch Nd-Yag 1064 & 532, Er-Yag 2940 & Pixel Er-Yag
2940 lasers. Complete remission of naevi is possible
many times. In case of Naevous of otta 80 to 90%
remission is considered as good result. Haemangiomas
100% remission is extremely rare. One should feel happy
with 70 to 90% remission.
