Will a face lift improve my skin texture and pigmentation?

No. It changes the position of tissue, not the quality of skin. Texture, pigmentation and fine lines need resurfacing or other treatment, often best staged alongside or after surgery.

A face lift repositions the deeper tissues of the face and removes excess skin to address sagging, jowling and a loose neck. It is the only intervention that genuinely lifts descended tissue. It does not improve skin texture or pigmentation, which need separate treatment, and it involves two to three weeks of visible recovery.

What it does that nothing else does

Ageing of the face involves loss of volume, deterioration of skin quality, and descent of tissue. Volume can be restored non-surgically. Skin quality responds to resurfacing. Descent — jowls along the jawline, sagging in the cheeks, loose skin and bands in the neck — is structural, and only surgery repositions it.

This is why choosing between a face lift and non-surgical treatment is not really a choice between a stronger and a weaker option. They address different problems, and quite often the best result comes from a lift for position plus resurfacing for skin quality, staged appropriately.

Recovery, honestly

Expect two to three weeks before you would be comfortable being seen by people who do not know you had surgery. Bruising and swelling are significant in the first fortnight, and tightness, numbness around the ears and cheeks, and a firm, slightly odd sensation in the treated tissue persist for weeks to months.

Swelling continues resolving for three to six months, and scars mature over a year. Anyone planning around an event should allow considerably more time than they think.

Longevity

Risks

Haematoma — a collection of blood needing prompt surgical drainage — is the commonest early complication and usually occurs in the first day. Numbness around the ears and cheeks is expected and generally improves over months. Injury to a branch of the facial nerve causing weakness of facial movement is uncommon; most cases recover but permanent weakness is possible. Skin necrosis, particularly in front of the ear, is substantially more likely in smokers. Unfavourable or widened scarring, distortion of the earlobe, asymmetry, changes to the hairline, and hair loss around the scars all occur. Infection and blood clots are possible with any surgery of this size.
