Liposuction
Available at Amrit Clinic, Mulund West, Mumbai. Every treatment starts with an in-person assessment.
Liposuction removes localised deposits of fat through small incisions to change body contour. It is a shaping operation, not a weight-loss treatment — the amount safely removed is modest, and it does nothing for loose skin or for overall body weight. Results depend as much on skin quality as on fat removal.
Key facts
| Purpose | Contouring localised fat — not weight loss |
|---|---|
| Anaesthetic | Local with sedation, or general, depending on extent |
| Compression garment | 4–6 weeks, continuously at first |
| Back to desk work | Around 1 week |
| Strenuous exercise | After about 6 weeks |
| Final result | 3–6 months, once swelling fully resolves |
What it is for
Liposuction suits localised fat that has not responded to sustained diet and exercise — flanks, outer thighs, abdomen, upper arms, under the chin. It works best on someone close to a stable weight who has a specific area out of proportion with the rest of them.
It is not a treatment for being overweight. The volume that can be safely removed in one operation is limited, and the weight change is small. Someone who wants to lose a significant amount of weight will get a better result from doing that first and then considering contouring, if it is still needed.
Skin quality decides the result
Removing fat from beneath skin that retracts well gives a smooth, tighter contour. Removing fat from beneath skin that has lost its elasticity leaves that skin loose, and the area can look worse than before. This is the most common reason for disappointment.
Where skin laxity is significant, the honest recommendation is a procedure that removes skin — an abdominoplasty rather than abdominal liposuction, for instance — or accepting the limitation. We will assess skin quality specifically and tell you which category you fall into.
Recovery in practical terms
- Bruising and swelling are substantial for the first two weeks and continue settling for months
- A compression garment is worn continuously at first, then during the day, for four to six weeks — this is not optional, it shapes the result
- Desk work is usually possible after about a week
- Strenuous exercise waits about six weeks
- Numbness or altered sensation over the treated area is normal for weeks to months
- Do not judge the result before three months; final contour takes up to six
Risks
Contour irregularity, rippling or asymmetry are the commonest problems and sometimes need revision. Fluid collection under the skin (seroma) may need draining. Prolonged swelling, altered sensation and firm areas as tissue settles are common and usually temporary. Infection, bleeding and blood clots in the legs or lungs are uncommon but serious. Fat embolism is rare and potentially life-threatening. Removing very large volumes in one operation raises risk substantially, which is why the amount is limited by safety rather than by request.
