Tummy Tuck Surgery
Available at Amrit Clinic, Mulund West, Mumbai. Every treatment starts with an in-person assessment.
A tummy tuck removes excess abdominal skin and, where present, repairs the separation of the abdominal muscles that pregnancy or weight change can cause. It leaves a permanent scar low across the abdomen. It addresses loose skin and muscle separation — things that no amount of exercise or liposuction will correct.
Key facts
| Anaesthetic | General |
|---|---|
| Scar | Permanent, low across the abdomen, hip to hip |
| Hospital stay | Usually 1–2 nights |
| Off work | 2–4 weeks for desk work |
| No strenuous activity | For about 6 weeks |
| Best timing | At a stable weight, and after you have finished having children |
What it corrects that other things cannot
Two problems respond only to this operation. The first is excess skin — after pregnancy or significant weight loss, skin that has been stretched beyond its capacity to retract does not tighten with exercise, creams or non-surgical treatment. It has to be removed.
The second is rectus diastasis: separation of the two vertical abdominal muscles down the midline, which is common after pregnancy. It produces a persistent bulge that no amount of core work resolves, because the muscles themselves have moved apart. During a tummy tuck they are stitched back together, which flattens the profile and often improves core support and back discomfort.
If your concern is fat rather than skin or muscle, liposuction is the less invasive option and we will say so.
The scar is the trade-off
A tummy tuck leaves a long permanent scar running low across the abdomen, usually from hip to hip, and typically a scar around the navel. It is placed to sit below underwear and swimwear, but it is a substantial scar and it is the price of the result.
It fades and flattens over twelve to eighteen months but never disappears. Anyone not prepared to accept that scar should not have the operation, and we will show you where it will sit before you decide.
Timing matters
Have it after you have finished having children. A subsequent pregnancy stretches the repaired muscles and skin again, undoing much of the result.
Have it at a stable weight. Significant weight loss afterwards leaves loose skin again; significant gain stresses the repair.
Risks
Fluid collection beneath the skin flap (seroma) is common and may need draining. Wound healing problems along the incision, particularly at the centre where blood supply is furthest, can occur and are dramatically more likely in smokers. Numbness of the skin between the scar and the navel is usual and often permanent. Blood clots in the legs or lungs are uncommon but serious and are the reason for early mobilisation and preventive measures. Skin or fat necrosis, infection, asymmetry, unfavourable scarring and the need for revision are all possible. Smoking makes several of these substantially more likely, which is why stopping in advance is a condition of proceeding.
