Becker’s Nevus Treatment

Overview

A Becker’s nevus is a large, irregular patch of darkened skin, usually on the shoulder, chest or upper back, that often becomes more noticeable around puberty and may develop coarse hair. Treatment addresses the two components separately: pigment-targeting lasers for the discolouration and hair-removal lasers for the hair. Recurrence of pigment is common, so expectations need to be set carefully.

Benefits of this treatment

Addresses both pigment and hair

Separate lasers target the discolouration and any coarse hair growth within the patch.

Realistic, honestly-set expectations

Recurrence of pigment is common and discussed upfront, rather than promising a result that isn’t reliably achievable.

How the procedure is performed

  1. 1 15 minutes

    Assessment

The pigment and any hair component are assessed to plan the combination of lasers needed.

  2. 2 20–30 minutes

    Pigment treatment

A pigment-targeting laser is applied to lighten the discoloured patch.

  3. 3 15–20 minutes

    Hair treatment (if present)

A separate hair-removal laser addresses any coarse hair within the patch, often in later sessions.

Recovery and aftercare

  1. Days 1–7

    Redness and mild crusting

Expected after laser treatment of the pigmented patch.

  2. Weeks 4–8

    Progressive lightening

Pigment fades gradually over a course of sessions.

Risks and side effects

Pigment recurrence

Common with this condition specifically — a realistic expectation to set from the outset, not a marker that treatment has failed.

Incomplete hair clearance

Coarse hair within the patch can be more resistant to laser hair removal than typical body hair.

Rarer complications

  • Pigment changes in surrounding skin — Temporary lightening or darkening around the treated patch can occur.

What it costs

What affects the price

Combined pigment and hair treatment

Addressing both components increases the overall number of sessions and cost compared with pigment alone.

Frequently asked questions

It commonly does, to some degree — this is a known feature of Becker’s nevus, not a sign the treatment was done incorrectly.

They are usually addressed with different lasers, sometimes in the same visit and sometimes across separate sessions depending on your specific presentation.
