Dimple Creation Surgery

Overview

Dimple creation (dimpleplasty) is a short procedure that forms a small, controlled adhesion between the inner cheek and the overlying skin, producing a dimple when you smile. It is performed entirely from inside the mouth, so there is no external scar. The dimple is usually visible at rest for the first few weeks and then settles to appear only on smiling.

Benefits of this treatment

No external scar

Performed entirely from inside the mouth, leaving no visible mark on the cheek or chin.

Very short procedure

Typically completed in 20–30 minutes.

Natural, expression-linked appearance

The dimple appears on smiling, closely mimicking a natural dimple rather than a static mark.

How the procedure is performed

  1. 1 5 minutes

    Anaesthesia

Local anaesthesia to the cheek from inside the mouth.

  2. 2 5 minutes

    Marking

The dimple position is marked with you sitting upright and smiling, so placement matches your natural facial movement.

  3. 3 15–20 minutes

    Creating the adhesion

A small suture is placed internally to create a controlled adhesion between the cheek muscle and the inner skin surface.

Recovery and aftercare

  1. Days 1–2

    Mild swelling

Slight swelling and a visible dimple even at rest is normal initially.

  2. Weeks 1–4

    Dimple settles

Swelling resolves and the dimple gradually becomes visible only when smiling, as intended.

  3. Weeks 6–8

    Final appearance

The adhesion matures into its final, natural-looking form.

Risks and side effects

Persistent resting dimple

Uncommonly, some visible dimpling at rest can persist beyond the expected settling period.

Asymmetry

Minor differences between the two sides can occur if dimples are created bilaterally.

Rarer complications

  • Adhesion loosening — Rarely, the created dimple can fade over months to years as the internal adhesion loosens.
  • Infection — Uncommon, given the small, controlled nature of the procedure, but a general risk of any intra-oral procedure.

What it costs

What affects the price

One or both cheeks

Bilateral dimple creation is priced differently from a single dimple.

Frequently asked questions

When placed and sized correctly, yes — the technique specifically links the dimple to your smile, so it appears and disappears the way a natural dimple would.

No — the entire procedure is performed from inside the mouth.

Generally yes, though in a small number of patients the effect can soften gradually over the years as the adhesion loosens.
