Liposuction

Liposuction , also known as fat removal surgery is commonly performed to remove excess fat from specific areas of the body. Today this is most frequently done surgery at most of the cosmetic surgery clinics world over. It is done more often in women although now it is no more uncommon in men. In spite of efforts to shed extra fat by various methods some women can find it difficult to lose fat from their arms, thighs, abdomen (stomach), buttocks, and in men from abdomen (stomach). Liposuction can help these people to get rid of that extra pad of fat. Fat removal surgery is not designed to be a quick-fix for obesity, but is instead intended for use in sculpting and reshaping specific areas. Liposuction is not a procedure for weight reduction but it is for body contouring / reshaping.

For women, some of the most commonly treated areas are the abdomen, hips, buttocks, inner and outer thighs ( saddle bags ), knees, and chin area, whereas in men it is done for abdomen . Though Liposuction can be performed on almost any part of the body.

When total amount of fat to be sucked exceeds more than 5 liters it is considered as Mega Liposuction ,by some. But in Indian scenario almost all patients need more than 5 liters of fat suction. Therefore I consider it Mega Liposuction when more than 10 liters of fat suction is done. This large volume suction should be done only by well experienced Plastic surgeon.

The procedure for liposuction Surgery (fat removal)

liposuction operation can be performed under a general anesthesia, or local anesthesia with sedation often as a day care.

Mega Liposuction is always done under general anesthesia & often need 1 night stay in the hospital. In some cases observation & monitoring in ICCU for 24 hours is necessary.

liposuction Surgery can take between 1 to 3 hours whereas Mega Liposuction takes average 4 to 6 hours.

I do it by tumescent technique. A very small incision is used to infiltrate the large volume of tumescent fluid till the area is blotted. The hydro-dissection makes suction easy. With special liposuction cannula fat suction is performed. Incisions are always closed in layers & tight compression dressing is given.

Any additional gadgets like ultrasonic liposuction or power assisted Microaire system only add cost. Instead if surgeon maneuvers his hand skillfully better sculpting is possible. Skillfully done surgery by well experienced surgeon reduces cost substantially.

Compression dressing reduces postoperative discomfort dramatically. The compression dressings are removed after 1 week.

Patient is then given compression garments which patient has to wear for 6 to 12 weeks.
