Alopecia Areata Treatment

Overview

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks hair follicles, causing sudden, often patchy hair loss — a fundamentally different process from pattern baldness, and one that a hair transplant does not correct, since transplanted follicles can be attacked in the same way as existing ones during an active flare. Treatment is medical rather than surgical, and the course is unpredictable: many cases regrow spontaneously, while others need ongoing treatment.
