Port Wine Stain Treatment

Overview

A port wine stain is a vascular birthmark caused by abnormally dilated capillaries, present from birth and, unlike a haemangioma, does not fade on its own — it typically persists and can darken and thicken with age if untreated. Pulsed dye laser is the standard treatment, working best when started in infancy or childhood; adult treatment can still lighten a port wine stain substantially but usually cannot clear it completely.
